D2 knife construction

A) Advantages of stock removal construction
1) The great advantage of stock removal is it allows the use of the high quality stainless and stain resistant steels. Stain resistant D2 steel combined with canvas micarta combine to make an excellent easy care everyday carry knife.
2) Stock removal lends itself well to full tapered tangs. This creates strong well balanced knives.
3) Modern tool steels used in stock removal knives are excellent at holding an edge.

B) Heat treatment
D2 stock removal knives are heated in a computer controlled electric furnace. Blades are wrapped in stainless foil to prevent scaling. Blades are air quenched to 150 degrees and tempered. The next step is 24 hour soak in liquid nitrogen. This is followed by 2-2 hour temperings in the electric furnace.

C) D2 knife care
While not considered stainless, D2 requires little more than routine cleaning and drying after use to keep it looking new.
A few light strokes on a fine sharpening stone should keep the blade shaving sharp. If blade is allowed to get very dull or damaged, a few strokes on a course stone to bring the edge up to a burr, followed by a few light strokes on a fine hone should bring it back to full sharpness.
Knives in general should not be stored in leather sheaths. Moisture and tanning chemicals combine and will ruin a knife in short order.
